heART a craft :: simple

"heART a craft"
a collection of favourite images & ideas
collection no.8
(i know i'm blogging ... don't fall over!)

these are quilts saved in my littlesmARTys
pinterest folder :: textiles
selected a few to show
how beauty in simplicity
is stunning
ok yes the very top one is not actually
'simple' but its structure is ....
there is quite amount of plain colour
in 3 of these & i do love using blocks of colour
am going to try to bring myself back to using & playing with
blocks of colour some more
 so just finding some inspiration
in works by others
love that you can see the hand stitching in some of these
this one of these simple crosses
immediately reminds me that
i have enough whirly gigs in
red & aqua to make 2 large single quilts
yep ... need to finish some ufo's
i'd even planned on 'framing' them with a warm neutral
alike this .... but i'm thinking still as i really like
the affect of them stacked on top of each other
like this larger block version made
by awesome friend Sam ....

purple & green

 so way way back ....
when we had a different address
i organised a block swap
the idea was that it might be the perfect way
to keep in-touch with some friends
thus began the block swaps of 2009 & 2010
09 was all purple & green
here's the "how to tutorial"
it was all great fun & now holds some lovely memories
so what we all did ...
each month we had the 'homework' of sewing up 12 or so blocks
working with the block design & size & variations
the only rule was that we were to include one of 2 base fabrics
any other fabrics were to be purple or green of choice
we'd get together, rotating visiting one another's homes
there was show n'tell & lots of laughs
each time we always sewed an extra block ....
went into a box intended for our
i was supposed to have gifted this a very long time ago
not sure what happened at the time
but then it was packed away ....
just last week i passed it on to mum
(my mum .... yep she's a crafty type too & she is a major part of P&S's)
last wednesday .... she arrived with purple & green blocks in hand
would you believe that ....
that very day there was a prayer quilt request in purple & greens!!!
not kidding ... a God thing i think!
so this lap sized prayer quilt was pieced together
for a special lady who played a part in our ABC's history
we hope you feel the love & prayers of all the peoples
from now & then from ABC Mabel .... you are loved
these photos are from our time during church yesterday
when the ties were tied ... & a prayer is said
i'm so pleased with this end result
it seems that it is all in God's timing

so a big thankyou to Katherine & Kylie & Sam & Louey
& Wendy & Nicole & Jo & Lizzie & Jenny
i love the journey that was this block swap
we really should all get together with our 'finished' quilts!!

you can see a glimpse of Katherine's finished p&g block swap
quilts over here .... she made them into twin quilts for her 2 older girls
i know that Nicole has sewn all her blocks together
& here's mine .... um .... cough .... still not finished ...
however it is now all at least pieced together as a finished quilt top!!
i added another strip layer to each of my blocks ...
& then
the following year
there was the red & aqua swap
with a slightly different crowd of friendly faces
that's another story .....

amen to all the seasons of life

a little sewjourn

found myself away ... again ... on the weekend
yes - completely spoilt with time to sew for fun lately
in a little cottage & studio
known well about the traps .... in country victoria
we have driven by this neat retreat so many times
on our way up to 'our' riBer .... that
my husband now points it out to me!
now i've been & stayed & sewed ... yay
we had gorgeous blue skies
crisp cold days & nights ... & frozen hot water taps
we were warm & snug
greeted by a cosy cottage with a fire burning - thanks mel...
plenty of space to spill out & be free to work on any of the multitude
of projects brought along
i made a promise that i would only work on
quote "stuff for me"
this weekend it was all about the journey .... no real finishes
but alot further along the road with quite a few projects
& a couple of new ones in the mix too!

the project list included:
in aquas & red from way back ....
i remember that i started to sew this all together
in a different layout & i changed my mind
then i made more blocks ...
& thankfully i had it all written down
it arrived in Lancefield in block form
departed as a quilt top ...
does it 'need' a border? not sure ...

another enJOY the journey kind of quilt
aka katie ... that i really adore
once apon a time i went through my entire fabric stash
so did a great friend of mine
we made up our HST's & then did a little
one on one swap ... where we only swapped the ones we wanted to
& we are cool enough with each other to say - nah, not that one but ta!
not all sewn together yet by any means ... queen sized
but it is on its way ... see the favourties carelful auditioned
for the centre stage!

now ... since i was on a roll with digging out the ufo's
there were some snowballs to work on too ...
i really love this quilt & i have no idea why i haven't pulled it all together before now
... there is an enJOY the journey story behind this one
re: running out of the orange-y base fabric
& another about a mystery missing block
... both literally blocked my path with this quilt
... but it is now all sewn together as a finished quilt top
yay ... for ginger blossom

what else ...
ahhh yes ... nothing like another project
this one has a deadline ...
for it is my outfit for the day
had to be done
.... the circles ... i have them on my mind
really awesome piece of treasured fabric purchased on a recent
jaunt away to our nations capital ... at SIT
has the 'look' of hand screen printing
hemp ... lovely weight
its halfway to becoming one of Nikki's skirts...
main fabric is a wool in the perfect co-ordinating shade
that was found in my stash!! ... & the perfect amount
needed some coaching ... as it has been a v long time since i have made
myself a garment ... thanks my friend ... & for the late night chats too!
may need to be led through the whole invisible zip insert!
there was also some knitting of a little stripey vest for my little boy
& some free-form patch working from the scraps bag

 also been completely inspired by
parson gray ... & i have loved this curious nature range
for a while ... so it was time to commit!
also ... that circle-y theme surfes again!!
... the wonderful Brianna put this together over the course
of the weekend ... it looks absolutely stunning ...
she had lots of extra fabric ... so i've now cut out the best part of this same quilt
only mine has the fabrics in reflection .... intentional of course!!
thanks for the inspiration Brianna ... lovely getting to know you also!
 lots of yummy food
cosy place to lay my head
great company & new friends
late nights sewing & chatting
projects galore ... thanks girls
 karen - claire - leisl - brianna - mel - &me...
thanks ladies

HST's

How to ... its easy!

Step 1:
Cut x1 background fabric
&
Cut x1 Red/Aqua fabric
Cut these @4.5 inches square
Rule a diagonal pencil line from one corner to the other
@ 45 degrees!

Step 2:
Sew x2 seams ...
right sides facing together
one 1/4" on each side of the pencil line
... like this!
Step 3:

Use your ruler & rotary blade to cut along the pencil line... like this!
Step 4:
Iron seam towards red/aqua fabric &
Trim the 'ears' off ...
... like this!
Your finished HST block should be 4" square!

If any of this is confusing ... please ask me!

Working on something . . . some more

I had some time to work out the layout ...
.... sewed 20% of it together so far!
